HEADLINE: The Senate Democratic Leader says there are “conversations happening” to possibly pare down the number of potential tax measures on the November ballot.
INTRO: (:14) The head of the California state Senate says he’s concerned about the possibility that there may be more than one tax measure on the November ballot. He says that could mean failure for all of them, so he’s urging support for Governor Brown’s plan alone. Jenny O’Mara reports from Sacramento.

In a meeting with reporters, Senate President Pro-Tem Darrell Steinberg said he believes Governor Brown’s initiative to temporarily raise taxes on sales and high incomes would provide more help for the state’s General Fund. Steinberg spoke about the Governor’s measure and two other tax proposals working toward the November ballot. Steinberg says the Governor’s measure deserves to stand alone.
Cut: 0216JO_TAXINIT2A (:09) “All things being equal or close, I think the guy elected by the people of California oughta get a little deference. That’s how I feel about it.”
In regard to clearing the field for Brown’s initiative, Steinberg says there are “conversations happening” with supporters of the other measures.

The Democratic leader of the California Senate is voicing his concerns over the possibility that there will be competing tax measures on the November ballot. Senate President Pro-Tem Darrell Steinberg (STINE-berg) says he believes Governor Brown’s tax initiative would provide more help for the state than any other measure.
Cut: 0216JO_TAXINIT1A (:11) “But the real problem is, that if you have multiple measures on the ballot, you dramatically increase the likelihood that they will all fail. That’s not an acceptable outcome…”
Governor Brown has expressed similar concerns. His proposal would temporarily raise the tax on sales and high incomes.
A so-called “millionaire’s tax” initiative would raise taxes on people making more than a million dollars a year. A third tax measure would raise money for K-through-12 education.
